Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today said journalism must serve the people and should not function as a propaganda tool for any vested interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He made the remarks while addressing the Charge Handover and Farewell Ceremony 2026 of the Jahangirnagar University Journalists\u2019 Association (JUJA) held at the Senate Hall of the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cJournalism is not merely a profession; it is a responsible field that stands for humanity, democracy, and truth,\u201d he said, adding that there is a fundamental difference between a propaganda outlet of any corporate entity and a genuine media institution working for the welfare of the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minister emphasized that the people are the owners of the state and the government must remain accountable to them at all times, noting that a free and independent media plays a crucial role in ensuring such accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Highlighting the challenges in the media landscape, he said, the growing influence of corporate interests and the spread of biased narratives pose serious threats to professional journalism, urging journalists to remain vigilant, research-oriented, and committed to truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also cautioned that using journalistic identity to justify wrongdoing is unacceptable, while stressing that journalists must not face injustice or harassment under any circumstances. \u201cThe rule of law must apply equally to all,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Referring to democratic practices, the minister said such values are essential for ensuring stability in the state, society, and political process, adding that initiatives at the university level reflect an important culture of democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further said attempts are often made to disguise anti-people agendas under the cover of freedom or religion, and journalists must be able to distinguish truth from manipulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Congratulating the newly elected members of the association, he expressed hope that young journalists would contribute to building a responsible and people-oriented media environment in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
JU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan was present as the guest of honour, while Pro-VC (Academic) Prof Dr M Mahfuzur Rahman, Pro-VC (Administration) Prof Dr Sohel Ahmed, Treasurer Prof Dr M AbdurRab, outgoing JUJA President MehediMamun, General Secretary Abdullah Al Mamun, newly elected President MahAlam, General Secretary RazibRayhan, teachers, students and leaders of different student bodies were present, among others.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
