Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir\u00a0Uddin Swapan today said the government has undertaken a plan to excavate\u00a020,000 kilometres of canals across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"The government will excavate 20,000 kilometres of canals nationwide. The\u00a0formal inauguration of this nationwide programme will be held soon. As part\u00a0of the initiative, canal re-excavation activities have already begun in\u00a0Barishal,\" he said while inaugurating the re-excavation of the Kapalatali\u00a0canal at Kandapasha under Gournadi upazila around 11:30am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The re-excavation programme is being implemented under the Barishal, Bhola,\u00a0Jhalakathi and Pirojpur District Irrigation Development Project to improve\u00a0water management and boost agricultural productivity in the region, the\u00a0minister said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alongside canal restoration, a tree plantation drive has also been launched\u00a0as part of the government's afforestation efforts, he said, adding that the\u00a0activities would be further intensified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Local administration officials and other concerned persons were present at\u00a0the inauguration ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Highlighting the government's commitment to democratic governance, Swapan\u00a0said, \"We will not establish a partisan government or a partisan state, we\u00a0want to build a government of the people.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"If elected, we will remain in office; if not, we will step aside. But we\u00a0will institutionalise the electoral system,\" he continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
