{"id":30276,"date":"2025-09-30T01:56:50","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T01:56:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thebangladeshtoday.com\/?p=30276"},"modified":"2025-09-30T01:56:51","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T01:56:51","slug":"salehuddin-warns-against-misinformation-to-safeguard-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thebangladeshtoday.com\/?p=30276","title":{"rendered":"Salehuddin warns against misinformation to safeguard economy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>TBT DESK:<\/strong> Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed on Monday warned against economic misinformation and stressed the need for greater transparency, stronger auditing, and enhanced training for journalists and investigators to safeguard Bangladesh\u2019s economic interests and bolster public trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was speaking at the inauguration of academic programmes of the ERF Institute and a seminar on \u2018Financial Transparency in Corporate Sector\u2019 at the ERF auditorium in the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The adviser criticised what he termed \u201cclever manoeuvres\u201d by certain actors to divert funds and siphon them abroad. He said these practices highlight the urgent need for robust oversight by Bangladesh Bank and other regulators, and for auditors to adopt more rigorous, evidence-based methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe problem is not only that money moves, but that it moves in ways that evade ordinary scrutiny,\u201d Dr Salehuddin noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Salehuddin also cautioned that some media coverage amplifies narratives that can weaken institutions or empower authoritarian forces. He urged journalists to be constructive, fact-driven, and balanced in reporting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we speak positively about what is working, that helps build confidence; reckless narratives do the opposite,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He emphasised the importance of investigative journalism, recommending short, practical training programmes focused on verification, analytical methods, and case studies. Journalism education, he argued, must highlight hands-on fieldwork \u2014 such as interviewing farmers, tracing supply chains, and validating statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calling for audits that \u201cgo beyond paper exercises,\u201d the adviser said investigators must develop intuition and methodology to follow the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAudit cannot be a paper exercise \u2014 it must verify where numbers come from and how they were generated,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finance Secretary Dr Md Khairuzzaman Mozumder lauded economists and financial analysts for shaping pragmatic fiscal policies, recalling how their recommendations influenced the government\u2019s choice of a realistic budget amid inflationary pressures last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had initially thought of going for a larger budget, but based on your recommendations, we opted for a more realistic and relatively smaller budget.
