Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain today called on Non-Resident Bangladeshis (NRBs) to engage in the politics of their host countries instead of Bangladesh\u2019s domestic politics to enhance the nation\u2019s global branding and influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis [involvement in local politics] is our path, if we want to be influential globally,\u201d he said while inaugurating an NRB conference on Bangladesh branding at a hotel in the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhen NRBs hold important positions in their host countries, it will create a strong brand image for Bangladesh worldwide,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Citing the example of the Indian diaspora, Touhid said, Indians have achieved significant global influence by securing crucial positions in governments and political bodies in different countries, especially in Western nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The foreign adviser remarked that Bangladesh\u2019s political parties are among the largest in the world, with widespread branches across numerous countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHave you seen people from any other country gathering at airports in foreign lands to chant slogans against someone?\u201d he asked rhetorically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Such actions, he said, damage Bangladesh\u2019s image and branding abroad. \u201cYou never see Indians doing such things. Why do Indians enjoy various benefits abroad while we do not? Because we are less involved in local politics,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He emphasized, \u201cBranding is essential, and the way forward is through involvement in local politics.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Touhid also pointed out that Indians have secured influential positions in international media, a goal Bangladeshi NRBs should aspire to achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The foreign adviser urged NRBs to counter false propaganda against Bangladesh in international arena especially in Indian media, particularly narratives suggesting a war-like situation or minority-targeted violence in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSome incidents have occurred, but they were not aimed at minorities due to their religious identity,\u201d he said. \u201cFor example, if ten houses were attacked, eight of them were owned by Muslims.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He called on expatriates to actively combat misinformation and disinformation about Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Touhid also stressed the importance of reducing migration costs and improving the skills of Bangladeshi workers, including language proficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe can double our remittance volume, if we make our workforce more skilled,\u201d he said.
He assured that the interim government is committed to addressing issues at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), including harassment of passengers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are determined to bring those responsible for such harassment to justice,\u201d he added.
Touhid praised Bangladeshi UN peacekeepers for their significant contributions to enhancing the country\u2019s image globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"We need to enhance our positive image. Our peacekeepers have built a strong image for us in Africa. These are positive images. On the other hand, when we cross the Mediterranean Sea (illegal migration), our image is tarnished,\" he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regarding the foreign investment, the foreign adviser hoped that once the electoral roadmap is in place, investors will feel secure, and investments will follow. \u201cThe electoral roadmap will come soon,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the conference, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur stated that the interim government has addressed many of the past weaknesses.
He highlighted that remittance has increased by an average of 26% over the past six months, amounting to three billion dollars during this time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Besides, he said, exports have reached 2.5 billion dollars. He emphasized ongoing efforts to establish a favourable environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Speaker of London\u2019s Tower Hamlets Barrister Saif Uddin Khaled said that NRBs in the United Kingdom (UK) is always by side of the Bangladesh people.
\u201cWe have a debt of blood to Bangladesh. When harm befalls in Bangladesh, we roar in London. When you are hurt, we feel the pain. Your sorrow moves our hearts,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
President of the Bankers\u2019 Association Abdul Hai Sarkar expressed concern over the frequent disputes and conflicts involving expatriates abroad, calling it an unfortunate situation that needs to be addressed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also emphasized the importance of improving the skills of Bangladeshi workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Former Commander of the UN Peacekeeping Force, Major General (retd) Fazle Elahi Akbar highlighted the army's vital role in enhancing Bangladesh's global image, attributing this to their discipline and clean record. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMoreover, there are no allegations of sexual harassment against them (Bangladeshi peacekeepers). They could be further involved to boost the country\u2019s trade\u201d, he added.
