Rajkummar's drama sees a slow start, needs weekend push

Actor Rajkummar Rao’s courtroom drama Prahaar: The Ujjwal Nikam Story has opened to a modest response at the box office, collecting Rs 3.52 crore worldwide on its first day in theatres. Released on Friday, October 16, the film recorded an India nett collection of Rs 2.35 crore, according to Sacnilk.

The film’s India gross stood at Rs 2.77 crore, while overseas markets contributed Rs 75 lakh, taking its worldwide gross to Rs 3.52 crore. It recorded 4,133 shows across India, with an overall occupancy rate of 13 per cent. The Hindi 2D version registered 15.35 per cent occupancy, with night shows recording the highest turnout at 25.85 per cent, followed by evening shows at 15 per cent, afternoon shows at 11.15 per cent and morning shows at 5.69 per cent.

Prahaar follows public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and revisits landmark criminal cases in India’s history, including the 1993 Bombay blasts and the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The film explores the legal battles and prosecution efforts surrounding these cases, bringing the courtroom proceedings and pursuit of justice to the big screen.

The film’s performance over the weekend will be crucial in determining whether it can build on its opening-day collections. It needs a significant jump over the weekend and strong weekday collections to improve its box office prospects.

IndiaToday.in’s review of the film reads, “For a film about 26/11, the biggest disappointment is how rarely it makes us feel the full impact of the attack. This can never be just an Ujjwal Nikam story. It is about the attack, the attacker and the attacked, more than the man in the black coat fighting the case. But somehow the focus remains so much on him that the film never creates the impact it had intended. The subject had enough emotional heft to knock the wind out of you. The film, unfortunately, keeps stopping short.”

The film also features Wamiqa Gabbi as Jyoti Nikam, Lalit Prabhakar as Ajmal Kasab, and Jaideep Ahlawat and Sikandar Kher in pivotal roles.
