Prime Minister’s Adviser and PMO Spokesperson Mahdi Amin today said the government would extend all out support for solar power expansion through panel installations atop private and institutional structures as part of its long term plan.
Addressing a seminar on solar power, he said the government was encouraging individuals and institutions to install solar panels based on their capacity and feasibility.
“The government’s specific target for solar power is not an abrupt initiative. Rather Prime Minister Tarique Rahman formulated the solar power plan many years ago, which is now being implemented at the individual, institutional and industrial levels,” Amin said.
State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr MA Muhit also joined the seminar titled “Leading by Example: Scaling Rooftop Solar in Public Sector” staged as part of “Bangladesh Solar Expo-2026” at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka.
Amin said even before assuming the office as the Prime Minister, Tarique Rahman had repeatedly said that solar energy must be given highest priority to achieve self-reliance in the country's energy and power sector.
He said Tarique Rahman’s long-standing vision was now reflected in national policies following his assumption of state responsibilities.
“The Prime Minister had not only spoken about the importance of solar energy long ago but had also installed solar panels on the rooftop of his own residence as a personal initiative after taking office,” the PMO spokesman said.
He said initiatives were taken to expand solar power facilities to more than one lakh primary, secondary, higher secondary, technical, madrasa and university-level institutions across the country.
The PM’s adviser, however, called for private and institutional initiatives to promote solar energy in residential buildings as well alongside industries, hospitals, to make the country's desired “solar revolution” a success.
Amin said identifying their rooftops or unused open spaces, all educational institutions suitable for installing solar panels would be brought under solar power coverage within the next six months.
He also said plans had already been adopted to implement solar power projects at more than 30 of the country's over 50 public universities.
The PM’s adviser said expansion of solar power required a coordinated process where the private sector would carry out the main implementation work at the grassroots.
“An enabling ecosystem is being developed by creating opportunities for necessary financing and capital management,” he said.
Amin said the government placed special emphasis in its first budget on increasing local production of solar panels and expanding backward linkage industries.
Mahdi Amin called for private and institutional initiatives to promote solar energy in all sectors, including residential buildings, industries, educational institutions and hospitals, to make the country's desired 'solar revolution' a success.
Power Division Secretary Mirana Mahrukh, Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board Chairman retired major general Md Mahbubul Haque, Barind Multipurpose Development Authority Chairman agriculturist Hasan Zafir Tuhin, Economic Relations Division’s additional secretary AKM Sohel, Asian Development Bank Deputy Country Director Akira Matsunaga and Solaric Director Engineer Naznin Akter were present at the seminar.
