A researcher at Missouri University of Science and Technology is bringing a new level of safety and efficiency to the global steel industry through advanced fiber-optic sensors. Rony Kumer Saha, a PhD student has been conducting groundbreaking research since 2022, building on his master’s degree in the same field from the university.
“Steel production is one of the most demanding industries in the world, and monitoring extreme temperatures and heavy machinery in real time has always been a challenge,” Saha says. “Our goal is to provide accurate, continuous data to make these processes safer and more efficient.”
Traditional monitoring systems often struggle under harsh industrial conditions, but Saha’s research leverages fiber-optic technology, which is highly resistant to heat and electromagnetic interference and capable of delivering precise measurements even in harsh environments.
By embedding fiber-optic sensors into steelmaking equipment, operators can continuously monitor critical parameters such as temperature fluctuations, structural health, and material behavior. “This real-time data allows operators to make proactive decisions, reduce the risk of accidents, and minimize downtime,” Saha explains. “It’s a significant step toward smart steelmaking, which is increasingly adopted by industries worldwide.”
In addition to improving safety, the sensors offer economic and environmental advantages. Unlike conventional systems, fiber-optic sensors are lightweight, resilient, and easily integrated into existing operations.
“Our work is about translating cutting-edge research into practical solutions for industries that have relied on traditional methods for decades,” Saha says. “We hope these innovations will help steelmakers worldwide achieve greater efficiency, sustainability, and safety.”
With the modernization of steel production, fiber-optic sensors are poised to redefine international standards for industrial monitoring, ushering in a new era of smarter, safer steelmaking.
