DHAKA  – The High Court (HC) today scrapped a writ challenging the legality of taking of oath by members of 11th parliament.

A High Court division bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Razik-Al-Jalil passed the order this morning.

“The newly-elected members of parliament took oath on January 3, while the first session of the 11th Jatiya Sangsad began on January 30. As per constitution, parliamentarians take charges of their offices on the first day of the first session. So by taking oath earlier they did not violate the constitution,” deputy attorney general Mokhlesur Rahman told newsmen.

AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, who moved the writ before the court, said they would go to Appellate Division against today’s order.

The High Court on January 17, scrapped a similar writ, saying it was ‘not pressed’. After that this writ was filed, which was summarily rejected by the High Court today.
