Awami League (AL) Presidium Member Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Bir Bikram, today said that all have been asked to remain vigilant so that none can obstruct city corporation polls through violence.

“Holding city corporation polls ahead of the parliament elections is a very important matter. The meeting decided to work together. We want to win through voting,” he said, emerging from a meeting of AL coordination committee on the upcoming Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election to be held on May 25.

The meeting was held at AL President Sheikh Hasina’s political Dhanmondi office in the city.

Noting that around 12 lakh people will exercise their franchises at 480 polling centers under 57 wards of nine police stations, Maya said a large activist group is needed to make the GCC polls free and fair.

“We want to win the poll by working together with the people from all walks of life, AL, Chhatra League, Jubo League, Sramik League, Swecchasebak League, freedom fighters and pro-liberation people of Gazipur,” he added.

Outlining the plan to hold the election in a smoother way, the veteran AL leader said, “We hope we could complete the necessary works before May 9 centering the polls”.

Measurers should be taken so that all people can cast their votes, Maya added.

Liberation War Affairs Minister and Gazipur AL President AKM Mozammel Haque, AL presidium members Qamrul Islam, Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin and Simeen Hussain Rimi, organizing secretaries Mirza Azam, SM Kamal Hossain and Sujit Ray Nandi, Women Affairs Secretary Jahanara Begum, Liberation Affairs Secretary Mrinal Kanti Das, Forest and Environment Affairs Secretary Delwar Hossain, Education and Human Resource Affairs Secretary Begum Shamsun Nahar, Industries and Commerce Affairs Secretary Md Siddiqur Rahman and Cultural Affairs Secretary Asim Kumar Ukil joined the meeting.
