DU observes ‘World Oceans Day-2018’

On the occasion of World Oceans Day 2018, Department of Oceanography of the University of Dhaka (DU) organized a rally in the university campus. Honorable Vice Chancellor of DU Prof Dr. M. Akhtaruzzaman was the chief guest of the event.
The rally was dignified by the participation of Dean of Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences Prof Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal, Chairman of the Oceanography Department Jobaer Alam, Director of International Center for Ocean Governance Dr. Kawser Ahmed. Students and teachers from various departments also joined in the rally with full enthusiasm.
The rally circumambulated different streets inside the campus. Earlier, the participants started to gather in front of the Curzon Hall to start the rally. Prof M. Akhtaruzzaman in his remarks said, a significant portion of our waste goes into the ocean. It is detrimental for our environment and a severe threat to biodiversity. We need to keep the ocean clean for our very own survival. I believe, the students of the Department of Oceanography will play a decisive role to ensure the integrity of our ocean. Recent verdict from ITLOS has created a potentiality of blue economic activities for our country. The department will closely look into this matter.
The rally was jointly organized by the Department of Oceanography and International Center for Ocean Governance. The theme of this year’s rally was, “Clean our Ocean”.
