DHAKA – US ambassador Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat today said her country will continue its support for safe and dignified return of persecuted Rohingyas to their Myanmar homeland.

“We’ll continue our cooperation and support to the process of Rohingya repatriation,” she said during her farewell call on President M Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban this afternoon.

Later, President’s Press Secretary Joynal Abedin briefed reports on the US ambassador’s meeting with the President.

Abedin said the President and the US ambassador expressed their satisfaction over the existing trade and investment cooperation between the two countries. They noted that the bilateral relations are growing day by day.

Bernicat, who presented her credential to President Hamid on 4 February 2015, highly praised the role of the Bangladesh government in sheltering the millions of Rohingyas who fled into Bangladesh territory being the worst victims of the atrocities of Myanmar military.

She lauded the initiatives taken by the government to face the Rohingya influx in Bangladesh. Mentioning the condition of national economy after the 1971 War of Liberation in Bangladesh, the envoy said the country has made a tremendous development afterwards which is really laudable.

“Having a dialogue is always better,” the outgoing US ambassador said, referring to the upcoming dialogue among the political parties of Bangladesh.

She hoped that the dialogues would bring a good result for the country and its people.

The US ambassador thanked the government and all concerned for providing necessary cooperation during her assignment here.

President Hamid hailed the US ambassador on the successful completion of her tenure in Bangladesh and hoped that the bilateral relations between the two countries would further strengthen in days to come.
