RU observes Prof Yunus killing anniversary

RAJSHAHI, – Rajshahi University (RU) authority observed the killing anniversary of Prof Muhammad Yunus paying rich tribute to the slain teacher at the campus today.

Prof Yunus, a teacher of the Department of Economics of the university and a leading economist who was also vice president of the Bangladesh Economists Association, was murdered on December 24, 2004. He was the registrar of the university.

Members of banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh killed the veteran teacher while he was walking in the morning adjacent to the RU campus.

RU Vice-chancellor Prof Golam Sabbir Sattar accompanied by Pro-vice-chancellors Prof Chowdhury Jakaria and Prof Sultan-Ul-Islam and teachers and officers took out a mourning rally from the RU senate building premises. They also placed wreaths on the memorial plaque of the deceased teacher.

Meanwhile, a special tribunal handed death penalties to two Islamist militants for the 2004 murder of Prof Yunus on January 28, 2010.

The convicts are Shahid Ullah of Sarakdanga village in Naogaon Sadar—and elder brother of top JMB leader Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai—and Shafi Ullah from Itagachha village of Satkhira Sadar.
