Over 100 shops gutted in M’singh hawkers’ market fire

More than 100 shops were gutted in a devastating fire that broke out at the hawkers market in Ganginapar area of Mymensingh district early Thursday.

On information, nine firefighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze at 9.30am after two and half hours of frantic efforts.

Acting director of Mymensingh fire service Shahidul Hoque said that the fire fighters had to struggle a lot to extinguish the blaze as there were no available sources of water near the market.

Hawkers’ market president Abdul Hoque said: “There were a total of 138 shops in the market. Of these, some were garments, ornaments and cosmetics shops.”

Traders of the market said that at least 150 shops were gutted in the fire which devastated them.

Additional Police Super Al Amin said: “Police members were vigilant to ensure discipline including controlling fire. But, reasons of fire couldn’t be known yet.”
