Police arrest husband over DU student Meghla’s death

DHAKA, – Police arrested Canada immigrant husband Iftekhar Abedin on charge of killing his wife Meghla Chowdhury Elma, a Dhaka University dance department student, from his residence at Banani here today.

Meghla Chowdhury Elma, 2015-16 session student of DU’s dance department, was found dead in her in-law’s house at Dhaka’s Banani area on Tuesday evening. Meghla was immediately taken to the city’s United Hospital at Gulshan where the duty doctors declared her dead. Later Meghala’s body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for autopsy.

“We have arrested Meghla’s husband for his alleged involvement in killing his wife,” said Nur-E Azam Mia, Officer in Charge (OC) of Banani Police station. Banani police arrested Abedin after a murder case was filed by the victim’s father M Saiful Islam Chowdhury. Meghla’s family claimed that she was killed after being tortured by her husband but Meghla’s husband refused the charge and claimed it was a suicidal incident.
