In a courtesy call to Charles Whiteley, the European Union Ambassador to Dhaka, Professor Mohammad Abed Ali, Chairman of the Election Monitoring Forum and Secretary General of the SAARC Human Rights Foundation expressed concern that violence and deaths in local government elections are tragic. Those who obstruct and intimidate people in exercising their right to vote are not real politicians. There is no substitute for freedom of opinion and speech in order to safeguard democracy, the rule of law and the continuity of development.

At the time, the ambassador said, diplomats were not interested in interfering in Bangladesh’s internal affairs. He praised the development of Bangladesh and said, “I was working at the embassy nine years ago.” In the light of the experience, I can say that the way in which the Prime Minister of the present government, Sheikh Hasina, is doing development and economic prosperity of Bangladesh is certainly commendable. Also present were Deputy Head of Mission Jeremy Opritesco and First Political Secretary Edward Evan.
