Seminar on SDGs held at DU

A day-long seminar on “Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs): Achievements of Bangladesh and Future Roadmap” was held yesterday at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University (DU). DU Development Studies Department and the Center on Budget and Policy jointly organized this event, a press release said.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman presided over the function while State Minister for Planning Dr. Shamsul Alam addressed it as chief guest. DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Dr. A S M Maksud Kamal and Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Sadeka Halim addressed the seminar as special guests. DU Treasurer Prof. Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed gave vote of thanks. Honorary Fellow of the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Prof. Dr. Mustafizur Rahman delivered key-note speech. Chairman of the Department of Development Studies Prof. Dr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir gave welcome address while Director of the Center on Budget and Policy Prof. Dr. M Abu Yusuf conducted the program.

DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Md Akhtaruzzaman stressed the need for collaborative efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Terming the students as the change maker of the society the VC said, they have to come forward with their skills of modern education, advanced level research and quality leadership to serve the nation. He emphasized on ensuring social equality and inclusive society to achieve SDGs. Economic development, social inclusiveness and sustainable environment are the important pillars of SDGs, he added. Bangladesh has been awarded SDG Progress Award and the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been introduced as the ‘Jewel in the Crown of the Day’, the VC pointed out. This award will encourage us in achieving SDGs, he hoped.

State Minister for Planning Dr. Shamsul Alam called upon the academicians to play pioneering role for producing skilled human resources as well as enhancing the quality of education. Our achievements in Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and SDGs were highly lauded and recognized by the international community. He said, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had formed Planning Commission to develop socio-economic condition in the country in a planned way.
