Sheikh Russel’s 58th birthday celebrated in Rangpur

RANGPUR,  – The 58th birthday of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was celebrated in the city today. Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies, Rangpur City Corporation, the district, divisional and police administrations, social-cultural organisations and educational institutions celebrated the day with various programmes.

The district, divisional and police administrations jointly celebrated the 58th birthday of Shaheed Sheikh Russel by placing wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Russel followed by offering munajats at the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises in the city.

Divisional Commissioner Abdul Wahhab Bhuiyan, Deputy Inspector General for Rangpur Range Police Devdas Bhattacharya, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Alim Mahmud, Divisional Commissioner (Revenue) Abu Taher Md Masud Rana, Deputy Commissioner Md Asib Ahsan and senior officials were present. Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) celebrated the 58th birthday of Shaheed Sheikh Russel through placing wreaths at his portrait followed by a doa mahfil held at the conference room of the City Bhaban.

Chief Executive Officer of RpCC Md Ruhul Amin Miah, its Secretary Md Rashedul Haque, Superintending Engineer Md Amdad Hossain, Panel Mayor Alhaj Mahmudur Rahman Titu and internationally celebrated photojournalist Pavel Rahman were present. Leaders and workers of the district and city units of AL and its associate bodies celebrated the birthday separately maintaining health directives of the government with limited programmes in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Leaders and workers of district AL at its associate bodies placed wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Russel followed by a discussion followed by a doa mahfil at district AL office at Betpotti area in the city tonight.

They prayed for eternal peace for the departed souls of Sheikh Russel and other martyrs, including the architect of the country’s independence and father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Presided over by President of district AL Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, its General Secretary Advocate Reazul Karim Razu addressed the discussion as keynote speaker.

Senior Vice-president of district AL Advocate Elias Ahmed, its Joint General Secretary Motahar Hossain Mandal Mowla, Organising Secretary Jashem Bin Hossain Jummon, Office Secretary Amin Sarker, President of district Mohila AL Mortuza Mansur, its General Secretary Advocate Zakia Sultana Choite and leaders of other associate bodies addressed the discussion.

Advocate Reazul Karim Razu said the conspirators assassinated Sheikh Russel cruelly aiming at reversing independence and sovereignty of the newly liberated country through eliminating Bangabandhu’s blood from this soil.

He strongly condemned assassination of Bangabandhu and most of his family members, including Russel on August 15, 1975, and said that no conspiracy would succeed to destroy the country’s independence. Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed stressed on informing the young generations about true national history and inspire them in becoming educated to take the nation forward for building a developed Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Bangabandhu.
