‘Sheikh Russel Day’ observed in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, – Marking the 58th birthday of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, people of Chattogram city and its adjacent areas today observed the first ever ‘Sheikh Russel Day’ in a befitting manner.

Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi 32 no road in the city. He was brutally killed along with most of his family members, including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975 when he was a student of class four at University Laboratory School. The Cabinet Division this year declared October 18, the birthday of Sheikh Russel, as Sheikh Russel Day under the category “Ka”.

Apart from Chattogram city, north and south district units of Awami League (AL) and its front organisations, different socio-cultural organisations, district administration, different government offices, educational institutions and professional bodies organised separate programmes to mark the day. The day’s programmes included placing of wreaths at the portrait of Shaheed Sheikh Russel and Bangabandhu, milad mahfil, discussions and quiz competitions on the life of Shaheed Sheikh Russel and blood donation.

Hundreds of AL workers gathered at the party office in the morning to place wreaths on the portrait of Shaheed Sheikh Russel, Bangabandhu and his family members. AL Chattogram city unit acting President Mahtabuddin Chowdhury, its General Secretary AJM Nasir Uddin along with leaders of city AL placed wreaths at the makeshift memorial at its party office in the Darulfazal market area today. Chattogram city units of AL organised a discussion at city’s TIC auditorium today with its Acting President in the chair and former city Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin addressed it as the chief guest. Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) and the district administration observed the day through various programmes including doa and milad mahfil, discussions, poetry recitations and essay competitions at all schools and colleges.

Chattogram north and south district AL chalked out elaborate programmes at upazila and union levels, which included discussions on the life of Shaheed Sheikh Russel. Later, a discussion was held at Shilpokala auditorium with deputy commissioner Mohammad Mominur Rahman in the chair. Marking the day, different educational and professional institutions including Chattogram University (CU), Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Chattogram College, Chattogram Press Club, Chattogram Union of Journalists, Chattogram University Veterinary and Animal Science University (CVASU), University of Chattogram Science and Technology (USTC), Chattogram Divisional Sports organisations and different colleges and private universities virtually organised separate programmes. Besides, Chattogram Zilla Parisad, Bangladesh Shishu Academy, Islamic Foundation, Civil Surgeon office in Chattogram, Bangabandhu Parishad Chattogram, Sheikh Russel Smriti Parishad, Projonmo-71 and Shaheed Smriti Pathagar also arranged different programmes to mark the day.
