Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikrom, today said the people of the country would not accept the Awami League's return to politics, describing it as a corrupt and terrorist party.
The Speaker made the remarks as the chief guest at a reception organised by Tazumuddin Upazila BNP and its affiliated organisations at the Upazila Parishad Hall this afternoon, following his election as chairman of the Asia-Pacific Group (APG) of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).
AL leaders looted public resources and amassed wealth abroad, he said.
Recalling political developments in his constituency, the Speaker said Sheikh Hasina had fielded Tofail Ahmed against him in the 2001 election. After Tofail's defeat, Sheikh Hasina brought a terrorist from Dhaka to contest against him.
The person had acquired 500 bighas of land in Lalmohan and several houses in Dhaka through corruption. After August 5, he fled abroad with his family, leaving all his properties behind, the Speaker said.
Hafiz Uddin pledged further development in his constituency, announcing plans to upgrade Tazumuddin to a municipality and build a recreational park on the bank of the Meghna River.
He also directed police to arrest an alleged criminal, Salaunddin Dakait of Char Mozammel, and called on the administration to ensure strict enforcement of drug laws.
The programme was chaired by Tazumuddin Upazila BNP President Golam Mostafa Mintu and conducted by General Secretary Omar Asad Rintu.
Local BNP leaders and activists attended, while upazila representatives of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami presented floral greetings to the Speaker.
Earlier, newly formed committees of the Lalmohan upazila, municipality and college units of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) greeted him at his residence in Lalmohan.
