Film 'Onnopata' eyes Durga Puja release

TBT DESK

A feature film centred on the challenges of university admission, 'Onnopata' brings together the stories of students navigating admission battles, family pressure, unexpected realities and romantic relationships. Nearly 40 students from four universities—Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), the University of Dhaka and the University of Chittagong—have worked behind the scenes on the film, produced under the banner of SJA Productions.

Directed by CUET student Md Shahjahan Anny, the film features University of Chittagong students Shakil and Prottasha in the lead roles. Shaim, Noman, Animesh, Ekushey, Imran, Monon and Roben appear in other roles.

The film is produced by CUET student Ankon De Animesh, BUET student Abtahi Shams and Shahjahan Anny. According to the director, the project has taken shape gradually over nearly two years. What began with a small team of just six people eventually grew into a group of more than 40 young creatives.

'Onnopata' is a film that brought all of us together. It is the story of how we grew from six people to 40. We always dreamed big, and that shared ambition gradually helped 'Onnopata' grow,” Shahjahan Anny said.

Explaining the story, he added, “The story of 'Onnopata' reflects our own lives. It goes beyond the university admission process to explore our responsibilities towards our parents and families, as well as our own feelings and expressions of love amid countless other obligations. I hope audiences will embrace the film.”

The team hopes to release 'Onnopata' in cinemas on October 16, during Durga Puja. However, the release date has yet to be officially announced as the filmmakers are still awaiting clearance from the Bangladesh Film Certification Board.

“Our entire team is keen to release the film during Durga Puja. Everyone is working towards an October 16 release, and discussions with cinema hall authorities are ongoing. Members of the certification board have already watched the film, and we hope to receive clearance soon. We will announce the release date officially once that process is complete,” Shahjahan Anny said.
