Keanu Reeves’ long-awaited sequel Constantine 2 remains in development at Warner Bros., despite recent changes in the studio’s ownership.
Reeves is expected to return as John Constantine, the occult detective who can see angels and demons among humans. The sequel is among the projects being overseen by Skydance Pictures co-chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein.
Released in 2005, the original Constantine, directed by Francis Lawrence, follows Constantine as he teams up with police officer Angela Dodson to investigate the mysterious death of her twin sister. Their investigation leads them into a hidden world of supernatural forces.
Although the film received mixed reviews upon release, it became a cult favourite over the years. Constantine earned $230.9 million worldwide against an estimated budget of $100 million. It currently holds a 46% critics’ score and a 72% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The sequel was first announced in 2022, with Lawrence returning as director and Akiva Goldsman attached to write the screenplay.
Reeves recently shared an update on the project, saying the team had pitched a story to DC Studios and received approval to begin working on the script.
“John Constantine’s going to be tortured even more,” the actor said.
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has previously indicated that the sequel would fall under the DC Elseworlds banner, allowing it to exist separately from the main DC Universe.
Constantine 2 does not yet have an official release date.
