

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called upon visiting UK lawmakers to play role in strengthening relation between the parliaments of the two countries and increasing investment.
The President made the call when a delegation of the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Bangladesh paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban today.
Apsana Begum, Chair of the APPG and British MP of Bangladeshi origin led the delegation while MP Shockat Adam and Member of the House of Lords Lord Qurban Hussain were also present.
Welcoming the delegation to Bangabhaban, the President said, "The people of Bangladesh will remember the contributions made by members of the British Parliament’s All-Party Parliamentary Group to restoring democracy in Bangladesh."
Mentioning the UK as an important economic and development partner of Bangladesh and one of its largest export markets, he said, Dhaka attaches great importance to Bangladesh’s longstanding relations with the United Kingdom.
He praised UK’s longstanding democratic tradition and good governance and called for further strengthening parliamentary cooperation between the two countries through reciprocal visits, exchanges between parliamentary committees and training of officials.
The President also expressed hope of creating a Bangladesh-UK Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Jatiya Sangsad.
Earlier at the outset of the meeting, Apsana Begum congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on being elected President and praised him for his struggle and succeeding despite enduring immense oppression and persecution during the long journey of the movement to restore democracy.
The delegation also conveyed sincere thanks and congratulations on the holding of a free and fair election in Bangladesh.
The President mentioned that the free and fair national parliamentary election held in 2026 was accepted both at home and abroad.
"Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is working to strengthen various institutions in Bangladesh, like different British institutions," he added.
The President’s Military Secretary, Secretary and Press Secretary were also present.
