Vidya Balan, R Balki reunite for Tamil film after 17 years

Bollywood actress Vidya Balan and southern filmmaker R Balki are set to reunite for a new Tamil project, 17 years after their acclaimed collaboration ‘Paa’.

The duo first worked together on the 2009 film ‘Paa’, in which Vidya played Amitabh Bachchan’s mother. The film went on to win the National Film Award, while Vidya received praise for her performance.

On Thursday, 1 October, Vidya shared a behind-the-scenes photograph on her Instagram Story, holding the script for the new project. She captioned the picture, “New Beginnings #NewTamilFilm with #RBalki.”

The 47-year-old actress can be seen wearing glasses and reading the script with her hair styled in a long, neatly arranged braid. Her post offered the first official indication that the project had entered production.

The filmmakers have not yet revealed the title or details of the story. The reunion has nevertheless generated considerable interest among film enthusiasts, particularly because it marks their first collaboration since ‘Paa’.

Vidya has several major commercial projects lined up for the second half of 2026. She will appear as Kantha in Rajinikanth-starrer ‘Jailer 2’. A first-look teaser for her character was recently released. She reportedly plays the eldest daughter of veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty’s character. The film is scheduled for release on 15 October.

Vidya will also star alongside Akshay Kumar and Raashii Khanna in an upcoming comedy drama directed by Anees Bazmee. The first schedule of the film has already been completed in Kerala, with its release scheduled for 4 December.
