President for elevating DU to world's leading universities

President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today called for improving the quality of education of Dhaka University to elevate it to the ranks of the world's leading universities.

The President made the call when a DU delegation led by its Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A.B.M. Obaidul Islam paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban here, President's Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam told BSS.

The President said the University of Dhaka is not only the country's premier institution of higher learning but also a centre of the country's politics, history, heritage and culture.

Laying emphasis on strengthening democracy, the President said, "Democracy is a culture that develops gradually through regular practice. Free, fair and impartial elections are essential for this purpose,” he said.

In this connection, he said adequate space must be provided to the opposition and political rivals to make democracy effective and that is the beauty of democracy.

During the meeting, the Vice-Chancellor congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on assuming the office of the President and briefed him on the overall academic activities of the university.

He also formally invited the President to attend the upcoming 54th convocation as the Chancellor.  The President accepted the invitation and assured him of his presence at the ceremony.

The President's Military Secretary, Secretary and Press Secretary, as well as the Pro-Vice-Chancellors and Treasurer of the University of Dhaka, were present at the meeting.
