The world of Westeros is heading to the big screen, with the first-ever ‘Game of Thrones’ movie, ‘Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest’, set to arrive on 6 June 2029.
Directed by Owen Harris, who has worked on ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’, the film will be written by Beau Willimon, best known as the showrunner of Netflix’s ‘House of Cards’ and a writer on Disney+’s ‘Andor’.
Plot details remain limited, but ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ is expected to follow Aegon I Targaryen, the founder of the Targaryen dynasty, as he begins his campaign to conquer and unite Westeros centuries before the events of the original ‘Game of Thrones’ series.
Aegon I has never appeared on screen, and HBO has yet to announce who will portray the character. The story will take the franchise further back into the history of Westeros, exploring a period that has previously been referenced but never fully depicted in live action.
The Targaryen dynasty has already provided the foundation for HBO’s two ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-offs, ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’. The original series ran for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019 and became one of HBO’s most successful productions, earning numerous Emmy Awards.
While fans wait for ‘Aegon’s Conquest’, ‘House of the Dragon’ is set to continue with a fourth season, while ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ has also been renewed for a second season.
With its 2029 release date now confirmed, ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ will mark a new chapter for the franchise as Westeros makes its first major journey to cinemas.
