Independent filmmakers often face greater challenges when it comes to release their films than making them. They have frequently expressed frustration over the difficulties involved in getting their work screened. Recently, the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy introduced paid screenings with independent filmmakers in mind. Now, Cine Totem is set to launch as a new platform dedicated to independent film screenings.
The platform will regularly host screenings on the last Thursday and Friday of every month at the Russian House auditorium in Dhanmondi, Dhaka.
According to the organisers, the films will be screened in the internationally recognised DCP format, accompanied by 7.1 surround sound. This will give audiences the opportunity to enjoy a complete cinematic experience.
The inaugural event was held on September 24 and 25.
On September 24, the lineup features Russian filmmaker Arsen Aristakesyan’s ‘The Mute’, Golam Rabbani’s ‘Churat’, Mohammad Nuruzzaman’s ‘Mastul’, and Khandakar Suman’s ‘Satao’.
On September 25, the screenings will include Molla Sagar’s ‘Vobar Bhita’, Afroza Hossain Sara’s ‘Timir Gaan’, and Ivan Monowar’s ‘Passenger’. The day will also feature Akash Haque’s feature film ‘The University of Chankharpul’.
Following each screening, a question-and-answer session and informal tea gathering will be held with the participation of audiences and film professionals. The initiative aims to create an opportunity for filmmakers and viewers to exchange opinions directly and engage in open discussions about cinema.
