All necessary steps to make Banshkhali flood-free will be taken: Dulu

Disaster Management and Relief Minister Asadul Habib Dulu today said the government will take all necessary steps to make Banshkhali flood-free so that its people do not have to face the natural calamity every year.

"The canals in this region have long been on the verge of disappearing due to encroachment and pollution. As a result, even normal rainfall causes them to overflow, inundating vast areas. To address the problem, the canals will be re-excavated to restore water flow and ensure that floodwater drains away as quickly as possible," he said.

The minister made the remarks while talking to journalists during an inspection of rehabilitation activities for people affected by the recent floods in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram this morning.

Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Chattogram tomorrow to attend various programmes. He is expected to participate in a number of daylong activities, including construction of houses for flood victims and distribution of relief materials.

Later, Asadul Habib Dulu inspected the venue of the Prime Minister's public rally at Baharchhara area in the upazilla. Local lawmaker Zahirul Islam and BNP leader Mishkatul Islam Chowdhury Pappa, among others, were present at the time.
