Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo today said that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman was the first to call for a 'Green Revolution' in the country.
“The architect of modern Bangladesh Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman taught ordinary people how to build a self-reliant nation by loving nature, through strengthening the rural economy, canal-digging programmes and extensive tree-planting campaigns,” he said while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the month-long tree-plantation programme-2026 for the Dhaka-18 constituency, said a press release here.
The event held at the Nawab Habibullah School and College premises in Uttara of the city.
The minister called upon every family, educational institution, youth, and youth organizations to plant at least one tree and care for it regularly. He expressed optimism that through collective efforts, the target of increasing the country's tree cover to 27 percent by 2035 can be achieved ahead of schedule.
Speaking as a special guest at the event, State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque said that a tree not only provides oxygen; it also plays a vital role in protecting the environment, preserving biodiversity, and reducing the risk of natural disasters.
He urged everyone to pay attention to the Prime Minister's commitment to planting 25 crore trees within five years, as part of implementing the current government's election manifesto.
