World Press Freedom Day tomorrow

The World Press Freedom Day will be observed tomorrow with the theme 'Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security'.

Every year, May 3 is observed as the World Press Freedom Day to evaluate press freedom around the world to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession, according to the website of UNESCO.

World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO's General Conference in 1991, the website added.

Marking the 'World Press Freedom Day 2026', the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting will organize a rally and a discussion in the capital tomorrow aiming to highlight the role of media in ensuring transparency and accountability in the digital era.

The programme will begin with a rally at 9:00 am, starting from the Officers’ Club premises and ending at the Tathya Bhaban complex in Dhaka, according to a media release issued by the Press Information Department (PID) today.

Later, a discussion will be held at 9:30 am at the conference room of the Department of Films and Publications in Tathya Bhaban complex on Circuit House Road here.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon is expected to attend the programme as the chief guest while State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Choudhury will  be present as special guest.
