BNP repeatedly led nation through crises via democratic process: Swapon

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today said that BNP has consistently guided the nation through periods of crisis by adhering to democratic and constitutional processes.

Participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks on the President's address in the Jatiya Sangsad, he said BNP has historically chosen political and democratic pathways rather than relying on state power during difficult times.

The session was chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram.

Swapon said BNP has played a significant role in addressing various crises throughout Bangladesh's political history and remains committed to resolving future challenges through democratic means.

Describing the current parliament as a reflection of the country's evolving political landscape, he said it is more diverse than previous legislatures. According to him, shifting electoral behavior and changing political dynamics have created a new reality in the democratic process.

The minister said BNP made notable contributions during major political events, including those in 1971, 1975, 1982 and 2024. He credited the leadership of the party's founder Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for guiding the party through such periods.

Swapon said the government assumed office with a debt burden of nearly Tk 30 lakh crore and is actively working to manage it. He added that daily transactions in the stock market have doubled from Tk 500 crore to Tk 1,000 crore, while remittance inflows have also risen significantly.

Addressing global challenges, he said ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have disrupted energy supplies and contributed to global economic volatility. In response, he noted, a national consensus has been reached in parliament to tackle the energy crisis.

The minister also said the law and order situation in the country is gradually improving. He mentioned that the finance minister is set to present a national budget of around Tk 8 lakh crore, describing it as a major challenge for the government.

Calling for unity, Swapon urged opposition parties and the 11-party alliance to play a constructive role in parliament. He stressed that national development requires cooperation and responsible political engagement. He also pointed out that ideological differences continue to shape debates over key historical events, including the War of Independence and the July uprising.
