Political Adviser to the Prime Minister and also Adviser to the Ministry of Industries Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed today said Jamdani is a symbol of Bangladesh’s glorious history and cultural heritage.

“Once, the handloom industry of Bengal was widely admired across the world. However, the sector suffered significant setbacks during the colonial period. Despite that, Jamdani has survived because of the tradition and craftsmanship of our weavers,” he said.

Rizvi made the remarks while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the five-day “BSCIC Jamdani and Handicrafts Fair-2026” as the chief guest held at the Krishibid Institution auditorium in the capital.

Industries Secretary Md Obaidur Rahman chaired the event while Chairman of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Md Saiful Islam moderated the programme. Internationally renowned fashion designer Bibi Russell was also present.

The Prime Minister’s political adviser emphasised diversification, research and the use of technology to preserve and promote the country’s traditional Jamdani industry. He also stressed the need to protect the interests of weavers and take necessary initiatives for their welfare and development.

In his speech, Rizvi said Jamdani is generally associated with sarees, but diversification is essential. “Jamdani fabrics are already being used to produce kurtas, fatuas and salwar-kameez, and these products should be promoted further,” he added.

He said online marketing has already increased Jamdani sales, but the sector must become more technology-driven and oriented towards international markets. He also stressed the importance of research and development, the use of natural dyes and creating a supportive environment for weavers.

The Adviser noted that a large number of women are involved in the Jamdani industry, which plays a significant role in women’s economic empowerment. With proper support and improved infrastructure, the sector can contribute even more to the national economy.

Jamdani is Bangladesh’s first Geographical Indication (GI) product. It is a traditional textile of the country and widely regarded as the successor to the historic muslin. Jamdani is admired for its intricate patterns, rich colours and unique designs.
