IGP orders zero tolerance against extortion

Newly-appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir has instructed field-level police officers across the country to adopt a zero tolerance policy against extortion, robbery and drug-related crimes.

The directive was issued during an online exchange of views with police superintendents of all districts held from Police Headquarters today, said a press release of Police Headquarters.

Addressing the meeting, the IGP stressed that extortion and robbery, particularly on highways, must be stopped immediately.

He directed both the highway police and district police to intensify their patrols and surveillance activities to ensure safety on major roads across the country.

Highlighting the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, the police chief ordered law enforcement agencies to ensure safe and smooth travel for homebound passengers.

He emphasized the need for effective measures to prevent traffic congestion during the festive rush and to guarantee that people can reach their destinations safely and return without hassle.

The IGP also underscored the importance of improving public service at police stations.

He instructed officers to treat service seekers with respect and professionalism so that citizens leave police stations satisfied.

"People who come to police stations for services should be treated in a way that they can return with a smile," IGP Ali Hossain Fakir said.

He further directed that innocent individuals must not be harassed under any circumstances.

Efforts should be made to strengthen public trust and enhance the image of Bangladesh Police through responsible and people-friendly policing, he added.

Calling for unity and professionalism, the IGP urged district police superintendents to work together to build a safe Bangladesh.

Additional Inspectors General and other senior officials of Police Headquarters were present during the virtual meeting.
