

Newly appointed Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said the government is committed to keeping its pledges to the country’s people.
"We will keep the commitment we gave to the people. The government is responsible to the people and its main goal is to serve the people,” he told reporters at his ministry office here on his first working day.
Fakhrul, also the BNP Secretary General, said the existing problems will be resolved with the cooperation of all and local government elections will be held as soon as possible.
Replying to a question, he said he will work according to the expectations of the country’s people and the instructions given by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The minister said the government will work on all the problems the people are facing.
“The government will work on the problems of farmers, working people and women, the unemployment problem and others," he said.
Responding to another query, Fakhrul said the law and order situation and economy of the country are not as bad as they are being thought.
Besides, he said, there will be no mob culture, while the law enforcing agencies are being able to create a place of trust among them.
“We will properly fulfil the responsibility entrusted upon us by the prime minister. We need everyone's cooperation regardless of party affiliation and reaching above everything. People's participation is a key for the development of the country,” Fakhrul said.
