Election hailed as ‘role model’ for neutral policing: Home Adviser

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today said the recently concluded 13th national parliament election and referendum would stand as a milestone in Bangladesh’s electoral history, crediting law enforcement agencies for their “neutral, responsible and unique” role.

“The February 12 election and referendum will be remembered as a role model at home and abroad,” he said.

Speaking as chief guest at a farewell reception held at the Hall of Integrity at Bangladesh Police Headquarters, he praised the coordinated efforts of the Army, Police, RAB, Ansar, BGB and Coast Guard for ensuring a peaceful and credible election process.

The Home Adviser expressed gratitude to members of various law enforcement bodies under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam delivered the welcome address at the ceremony while Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali and Director General (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) AKM Shahidur Rahman were present, among others.

Additional IGP (Administration) Awlad Hossain offered the vote of thanks.

The adviser revealed that during a recent special cabinet meeting, the Chief Adviser highly commended the professionalism displayed by the law enforcement agencies during the polls.

Reflecting on the challenges faced after August 5, 2024, Chowdhury said the police force had regained a “fairly respectable position” through collective efforts.

He urged members of the force to continue working to strengthen public trust and institutional integrity.

Addressing concerns over recruitment, the Home Adviser asserted that no corruption had taken place in appointments made under the interim government.

“These appointments were conducted with the highest level of transparency, which is rare in the history of Bangladesh. I can swear that my office did not lobby for any such appointments,” he said.

Earlier in the day, the adviser attended farewell receptions organized by the Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, Immigration and Passport Department, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

He later joined similar events hosted by the Department of Narcotics Control and Bangladesh Ansar and VDP.
