Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has congratulated and thanked Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman for securing a “dignified result” in the 13th parliamentary polls held on Thursday.
“I sincerely thank you for the active and extensive participation and firm contestation of your party candidates under your leadership in the 13th national parliamentary elections and for accepting the election results in a calm and dignified manner,” he said in a message sent to the Jamaat Ameer today.
The Chief Adviser added: “From the election campaign period to the time following the announcement of results, your political decorum, restraint, responsible statements, and calls to party activists for peaceful conduct played a special role in maintaining overall stability in the country”.
He also expressed special thanks for the constructive support, advice, and cooperation extended by Jamaat-e-Islami during the tenure of the interim government.
Noting that Bangladesh is currently passing through a crucial period he said, “We have many challenges and opportunities ahead in terms of the global economy, technological transformation, climate change, human resource development, and social justice.”
In this context, the Chief Adviser emphasized that to further strengthen democracy and make it more participatory and institutionally consolidated, both the government and the opposition must play responsible and principled roles.
“I expect that under your leadership, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will play an active role in the national parliament and political arena as a constructive and responsible opposition force,” he said.
Prof Yunus added: “It is our aspiration that a healthy and positive political culture will develop in the areas of principled debate, legislative consultation, raising public expectations, and ensuring accountability of the state”.
“I firmly believe that you will continue to play the role you have played in the past in consolidating national unity in the days to come. National unity is our strength,” he said.
Prof Yunus prayed to Almighty Allah for Shafiqur Rahman’s personal good health, long life, and overall well-being.
