Bangladesh, Uruguay sign MoU on bilateral consultations

Bangladesh and Uruguay today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to institutionalise regular and structured bilateral political consultations, marking a significant step toward deepening diplomatic engagement between the two countries.

The MoU was signed after the first-ever bilateral political consultations between the two countries, established diplomatic relations in 1972.

Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam and Uruguay’s non-resident Ambassador to Bangladesh Alberto Antonio Guani Amarilla signed the MoU and led their respective delegations at the consultations held at the State Guest House Padma.

During the meeting, both sides reviewed existing cooperation and discussed the way of expanding collaboration in different areas including trade and investment, science and technology, defence training, disaster management, health, education, energy, agriculture, sports, and capacity building.

Bangladesh emphasised enhanced private sector engagement, including regular interaction between the apex chambers of commerce and industry of the two countries.

The Uruguayan side expressed strong interest in broadening cooperation in agriculture, fisheries and livestock, energy, and sports, among other priority sectors.

The two delegations also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interests, reaffirming their shared commitment to multilateralism and cooperation within the United Nations framework.

Bangladesh briefed Uruguay on the Rohingya humanitarian situation and sought its continued support.

Both sides agreed to maintain close engagement, hold the next round of consultations at a mutually convenient time, and promote high-level exchanges to further strengthen bilateral relations.
