Chief Adviser calls for political unity to hold polls in Feb

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today called upon all pro-July Uprising political parties to remain united for holding a free, fair, and credible national polls in February next.

"For nearly one and a half decades, our people were deprived of their right to vote. They are now eagerly waiting to exercise their franchise in the upcoming elections," he said in a televised address to the nation this afternoon.

He added: "The pro-uprising political parties must stay united to ensure a fair election in February. Otherwise, the nation will face grave danger."

Noting that he earlier expressed his concern in this regard, Professor Yunus said, "The unity that our people forged in July 2024 - standing tall and defiant in the face of death against fascism - must not be undermined by minor disagreements or petty divisions among us who survived."

Calling for giving priority to the national interest, he said, "What the people of this country want is simple - to honor the memory of countless martyrs and victims by showing tolerance toward differing opinions, to rise above party interests to uphold our shared national aspirations."

"We must honor the sacrifice of 133 children, hundreds of young men and women, and thousands who lost their limbs in the struggle," the Chief Adviser added.

Expressing hope that all political parties will respect the government's decision regarding the referendum and implementation of the July National Charter, Professor Yunus said the nation will move towards a festive and participatory national election.

He also said that the government is making all preparations to conduct the elections in a festive, participatory and fair manner.

"Through the elections, we will enter a new Bangladesh. We stand at the threshold of building a new nation," he added.
