No mercy for criminals: Home Adviser

Home Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has reiterated that no concession will be given to any criminal involved in setting fire to buses or exploding crude bombs, assuring that there is "nothing to fear."

"Criminals will not be spared in any way," he said while briefing journalists after a meeting of the Council of Advisers on Law and Order today at the Home Ministry in the Bangladesh Secretariat.

The Home Adviser said there is no apprehension centering the Dhaka lockdown programme by the now-disbanded Awami League, reaffirming, "Nothing to fear."

He directed the authorities concerned to ensure that the real criminals do not get bail.

Terming those who set fire to buses as criminals, Jahangir urged all-including political parties, the media, and the public-to resist them and assist law enforcement agencies in capturing them.

He said numerous measures have been taken following the recent criminal acts across the country.

Patrolling has been intensified and security measures have been enhanced at Key Point Installations (KPIs), he said.

To prevent misuse, the Home Adviser said roadside sales of transport fuel would remain suspended for a few days, as miscreants might use the oil for arson or other crimes.

When asked about the alleged failure of intelligence agencies in preventing arson and crude bomb attacks or sudden disruptive processions, Jahangir dismissed the claim, saying, "There is no intelligence failure. No big procession has been held."

Regarding the daylight killing of a criminal on Monday, he said the perpetrators would soon be brought to justice, adding that arrests have already been made in connection with a similar incident in Chittagong.

Jahangir said law enforcement agencies have been instructed to intensify the crackdown to recover looted police firearms.

In response to a question about preventing criminals from entering the country, he said the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been directed to check cross-border entry and contain criminal activities within the country's territory.

On preparations for the upcoming parliamentary elections, the Home Adviser said the government is satisfied with the progress.

He mentioned that electoral training for law enforcement agencies is nearly complete, and demonstrations will be held after training concludes.

To ensure security during the election period, around 1.50 lakh police personnel, 5.50 lakh Ansar members, and approximately 1 lakh army personnel will be deployed nationwide, he added.
