No scope to halt election, peaceful voting to take place: Shafiqul

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam today said there is no scope for any internal or external force to disrupt the national election.

"The countrymen will enjoy a peaceful, free, fair and inclusive election. A festive atmosphere is expected to be created centering the nationwide voting," he told reporters before laying foundation stone of a new building of Kushiara High School in Chauddagram upazila of the district.

Shafiqul Alam said some isolated attempts to create panic in the public through sabotage are being noticed ahead of November 13. Several incidents of arson attacks on transports have already taken place in different parts of the capital, he added.

He said that a transport worker was killed in these incidents. The law enforcement agencies are investigating each incident with great seriousness and are trying to identify those involved and taking legal action, he added.

He said the attempt to create such violence and public insecurity is tantamount to an attempt to tarnish the democratic process and electoral system of the country. The government is determined to ensure peaceful elections and the security agencies are on the highest alert, he added.

Alleging that the Awami League is trying to sabotage the election, the press secretary said, "This fascist political party is proving that their addiction is terrorist activities by inciting arson in the country. However, the national election will be held in the first half of February, and no domestic or foreign force will be able to halt the election."

Shafiqul Alam said there may be differences among political parties, but everyone is preparing for the election. BNP has already announced candidates for 237 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami is also fielding candidates of its own, he added.

Despite the differences, he said, everyone wants a festive and participatory election.

Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majunder, and Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jamal Hossain, among others, were present at the event.
