Sale of rice at Tk 10 per kg begins in Gaibandha

GAIBANDHA -The sale of rice at Tk 10 per kg has started in the district as elsewhere in the country yesterday to keep the rice market stable and help the vulnerable group feed at cheap rate under food friendly programme.

Department of Food is implementing the programme of the government in the district and a total of 1,17,237 card holders will get rice at subsidized price through 195 dealers, said an official.

The card holders each will receive 30 kg of rice at Tk 10 per kg in each of three lean months-September, October and November this year, sources said.

Of them, some 20,820 card holders will get the rice in Sadar upazila, 13,558 in Shaghata, 13,948 in Sadullapur, 24,011 in Sundarganj, 24,359 in Gobindaganj, 11,858 in Palashbari and 9,083 in Fulchhari upazila.

On Tuesday morning, the rice sale activity of the programme to the ultra poor families of the seven upazilas was launched through the selected dealers simultaneously like other parts of the country.

District controller of food M. Amzad Hossain visited a number of shops of the dealers on Tuesday and asked the food officials concerned and the dealers to sell rice to the poor properly without any irregularity and criticism.

Talking to BSS, district food controller M. Amzad Hossain said poor families led by women-particularly widows, divorced or abandoned and children will be given priority, according to the guideline.

In reply to a query, district controller of food said besides, the flour was also being sold to the poor at Tk 18 per kg under the Open Market Sale programme by the food department.
