District admin urges all not to pay heed to rumours, maintain harmony in Rangamati

The district administration and the army today urged the inhabitants of Khagrachhari not to pay heed to any rumours, urging all to maintain communal harmony here.

In this connection, the army carried out announcement through loudspeaker that the local administration remained on high alert to ensure that no one can create communal division or chaos in Rangamati centering the recent Khagrachari clashes.

The army made the announcement through loudspeaker at various important points here since Monday morning to make everyone aware of rumours, witnesses said.

The announcement said, “We all have to be aware at all times so that no unpleasant situation occurs here . . . We will all work together to ensure peace and security in Rangamati area.”

Meanwhile, apart from the armed forces personnel, additional police force has been deployed and BGB patrols have been beefed up in the town. 

Talking to BSS,  Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Habib Ullah Maruf said, “On Sunday night, a group identified as the Jumma Chhatra Janata called for an indefinite blockade in the three hill districts from Monday through Facebook, but the situation in Rangamati is almost normal till date.”

The DC added: “We, the district administration, have already held a series of meetings with the leaders of various political parties in Rangamati, civil society leaders, businessmen, representatives of various associations and clubs. We are all working together to keep the situation in Rangamati normal.”

He categorically said the administration is taking strong action to find out who called for the blockade.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of the district Dr SM Farhad Hossain called upon everyone to keep the overall situation in Rangamati normal.

Since Monday morning, all types of vehicles, including all long-routed vehicles are plying as usual, he added.
