Our main objective is to transfer power to elected govt through peaceful election: Jahangir  

Home Adviser Lt Gen (Rtd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today said the main objective of the interim government is to fulfill the aspirations of the people by transferring power to an elected government through holding a free, fair and neutral election. 

In this context, he said the people of the country will play a key role in holding a free, fair and peaceful election.  

The Home Adviser made the comments at a view exchange meeting at the Sylhet Deputy Commissioner's conference room today, according to a press release issued here.

He, however, said the role of the field administration and law enforcement agencies is crucial to hold the upcoming election in a free, fair and peaceful manner. 

“For a fair election, the preparation of the Election Commission (EC) alone is not enough, the field administration and law enforcement agencies must take proper preparations,” he said. 

The administration and law enforcement agencies must work together to create an environment so that the people can cast their votes without fear. “Fair elections will only be possible with the cooperation of all,” he opined.

Regarding the appointment and posting of various law enforcement agencies, including the police, the adviser said that this time the appointment and posting in the law enforcement agencies has become much more transparent. “Therefore, everyone must perform their duties impartially,” he said. 

Describing drug abuse as one of the major threats to the overall security system of the country, the home adviser directed the law enforcement agencies to show ‘zero tolerance’ towards drug dealers. 

The officials present in the meeting expressed their opinion on the overall law and order situation in Sylhet and its challenges. The adviser assured to take reasonable steps to address all the challenges. 

The advisor earlier visited the Sylhet Sector Headquarters of BGB and the Sylhet Police Line.

Highlighting the importance of agriculture in the overall economy of the country, Jahangir, also Agriculture Adviser said that farmers are the main architect of the country's food security. “Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that farmers get a fair price for their products.”  

The adviser called upon all concerned to bring the fallow agricultural lands under cultivation.
