Despite not being an authorized partner of Northwestern University in Khulna, Md. Mizanur Rahman has declared himself as the chairman of the board of trustees of this institution and has unjustly taken over the university.
Members of the Board of Trustees of Northwestern University, Khulna made this allegation at a press conference organized at the Sagar-Runi Hall of Dhaka Reporters University in the capital on Tuesday.
Former Chairman of the Board, Professor Dr. Mohammad Sirajul Haque Chowdhury, addressed the press conference.
They alleged that Mizanur Rahman elected himself to the position in a secret meeting without informing the former chairman.
On the morning of May 26, Northwestern University's Registrar (Acting) Dr. Shahida Khanam was informed of the chairman election in a letter signed by him.
It said that Md. Mizanur Rahman was elected as the chairman at the 73rd Board of Trustees meeting of the university on May 21.
Professor Dr. Mohammad Sirajul Haque Chowdhury said, "The meeting was held without informing me. Most of the trustee members were not present at that meeting, and no discussion was held with those who were present regarding the change of chairman."
He has strategically seized this position. And he is not an authorized partner (trustee) of the university, Dr. Haque added.
Raising the question, how can someone who is not an approved partner become the chairman of the board of trustees, he said that by doing all this, he has pushed the university into further danger. Thousands of students will be in trouble due to various legal obstacles.
The speakers said that according to the University Grants Commission (UGC) rules, a maximum of 21 trustees can be members of the board of trustees. Previously, the university had 18 trustees.
To fill the remaining three trustee positions, the names of Md. Mizanur Rahman, Syed Hafizur Rahman and Md. Azizul Haque were sent to the Directorate of Joint Stock Companies and Firms (RJSC) on January 30 for inclusion as trustees. However, RJSC has not yet approved them as trustees.
