Roulette is among the most popular casino games around. Since its inception in the 1700s, roulette has been a staple of gambling establishments, to a point that many casinos use roulette wheels as a symbol of their brand. For that reason, roulette remains a huge hit in the gambling world.
In the 1990s, roulette has become a staple of online gambling as well. The growing success of the iGaming industry has brought a lot of new faces to the game, who can take a spin here, to experience the game for the first time. Many of them may not be aware of the basics. So, in this article, we explain the most popular roulette terminology.
Wheel
The wheel, or the roulette wheel, or sometimes simply called the roulette, is the physical wheel on which the game is played. There are multiple types of roulette wheels, with the most popular two being the American and the French roulette wheel. Both are approximately the same, with one small difference.
The European, or French roulette wheel contains 37 pockets. Eighteen of these pockets are painted black, and another eighteen are painted red. There is an additional pocket marked 0, which is painted green. In American roulette, the same is true, except that there are two green pockets, one marked 0 and the other marked 00.
Croupier
Live gambling has grown a lot more popular recently, simply because of the advancements made in streaming technology. So, a lot of online roulette players are discovering that they can enjoy the game in real time, against a human operating the roulette. But, what would they call this person?
The croupier is the person in charge of the game, who is operating the wheel. They are basically the equivalent of a dealer in blackjack, or the stickman in craps. In live casinos, croupiers operate in front of a camera, and stream themselves to players from all over the world.
Inside Bets
When you are playing roulette, you are going to be placing bets that can be placed in two broad categories. The first are inside bets. These are specific bet types that require the players to wager on a number, or a group of numbers. For example, an example of an inside bet would be a wager that the ball will land on a pocket numbered “15.”
Inside bets are riskier than outside bets, which is why they usually provide a higher payout. Just remember, there is a greater degree of risk in exchange for the higher reward.
Outside Bets
On the other hand, outside bets require the players to place a broader wager. For example, rather than betting on a specific number, a roulette player could wager on “evens.” In that case, the player receives a payout if the ball lands on any even number.
Another example of an outside bet would be wagering on a color A player could place a bet on “red” or “black.” In that case, the player would get a payout if the ball lands on any pocket of the color that they’ve chosen to wager on. Outside bets are less risky, but that is why they also have a lower payout.
