If you’re still wondering whether or not the scene at the end of Inception was reality or a dream, Michael Caine might have an answer for you. The actor revealed even he was confused when he first received the script for the film, and didn’t know which parts of the film took place in reality and which ones took place in a dream. Caine recently revealed at a London screening for the film (via Syfy Wire) that Christopher Nolan helped him understand things more easily, and told him the scenes he was in were real:
“When I got the script of Inception, I was a bit puzzled by it, and I said to him, ‘I don’t understand where the dream is. I said, ‘When is it the dream and when is it reality?’ He said, ‘Well, when you’re in the scene it’s reality.’ So, get that — if I’m in it, it’s reality. If I’m not in it, it’s a dream.”
Well, there’s the answer, Inception has a happy ending. That said, Nolan has gone on record to say the ending of the film is meant to be intentionally ambiguous, so if you’re someone who really doesn’t want this film to have a happy ending, be sure to point that out when someone mentions this quote.
That said, I’ve always been curious: were you a fan of Inception’s ambiguous ending, or did you feel like you needed an answer for what happened?
