Mehazabien’s ‘Saba’ at Göteborg International Film Festival

TBT REPORT: Popular actor Mehazabien Chowdhury’s debut film “Saba” will have its European premiere at the 48th Göteborg International Film Festival in Sweden.

The film festival will run from 24 January to 2 February. “Saba” has been selected in its Voices section category dedicated to honouring the works of emerging filmmakers.

Earlier, in September last year, “Saba” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF)’s Discovery Programme. The film received praise during screening at the fest. The film has also been selected at the 29th Busan International Film Festival in the “A Window on Asian Cinema” category.

Mehazabien will be seen in the titular role in the movie “Saba”, directed by Maksud Hossain. After 14 years of TV acting career, the actor made her big screen debut through the film. Mehazabien also produced the project, in addition to acting.

The story and screenplay of the movie have been written by Trilora Khan and the director Maksud Hossain himself. The story of the film revolves around 25-year-old Saba, who cares for her paralysed mother, Shirin, after an accident leaves her unable to walk. As Saba shoulders the responsibilities of caregiving and earning a living, the daily grind seems never-ending, and Shirin’s demands grow as her health deteriorates.

While working at a job she found to earn money for Shirin’s surgery, Saba meets Ankur, who brings a glimmer of hope into her life.

“Saba” also stars Rokeya Prachy and Mostafa Monwar in the key roles.
