This year, the Bangladeshi short film, ‘Standpoint’ will compete in the ‘Short Films’ Category at the ‘Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Film Festival’ to be held on 31st October 2020 in Gujarat, India. The short film has already been screened at 14 film festivals in 9 different countries.

About the film, director Faridul Ahasan Shourav said, “The idea for the film originated during a conversation with two of my friends. The impact of Kurosawa’s ‘Rashomon’, Saint-Exupery’s ‘The Little Prince’ and Einstein’s ‘Theory of Relativity’ were still fresh inside my mind. That is why I intended to make a film based on different people’s contrasting standpoints. In the inceptive scene, we see some lunatic people’s unnatural activities. Each of them is abnormal in different ways. It becomes evident in the next shot that the previous incident was shown from the point of view of an unnatural insane person. He was thinking of all things happening in front of him in his personal way. Then two different observations were shown together – one which is unnatural from one side is natural from the other side. The pan shot mainly depicted the natural and unnatural prospect of the same person. In ‘Standpoint’, I have tried to experiment with storytelling.”

The cinematography was carried out by Akram Hossain. Foley sounds and music were recorded by Shariful Anik who did Editing as well. Ahsanul Haque and Asif Uzzaman took the responsibility of Still Photography of the film.

The film was also selected in several other prestigious festivals such as 300 Seconds Short Film Festival, Toronto, Canada; GEOFILMFESTIVAL, PADOVA, Italy; Festival de Cortometrajes “Jose Francisco Rosado” PACAS, Ciudad Real, Spain; 2020 Three Minutes Video Competition, Shilin, Taiwan; and We Care Film Festival, New Delhi, India.

It is to be mentioned that ‘Standpoint’ received an award from North South University’s Cine & Drama Club for being the Best Short Film at their Inter-University Short Film Festival, IUSFF. Moreover, this short film won the title of the Best Experimental Film at the ‘12 Months Film Festival’ hosted in Cluj Napoca, Romania.
