Lawmaker Israfil Alam passes away

DHAKA, – Awami League (AL) lawmaker of Naogoan-6 constituency M Israfil Alam passed away at a city hospital this morning at the age of 55.

Israfil Alam, also AL joint general secretary of Naogoan district unit, breathed his last around 6:40am today while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in city, his family sources said.

He was suffering from tuberculosis, diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases for long.

He is survived by wife, a son, two daughters and a host of relatives.

Israfil Alam was admitted to the hospital for the second time on July 17 and he was put on life support since Saturday last after his physical condition deteriorated.

Earlier, on July 6, he was first admitted to the private Square hospital with acute breathing problem and he was found COVID-19 positive after testing his sample.

But, after treatment for some days, he was diagnosed with coronavirus negative.

Israfil Alam was elected lawmaker from Naogaon-6 constituency for the first time in the ninth national parliament election. Then he was elected lawmaker for the third time in the eleventh Jatiya Sangsad election following being elected as a Member of Parliament uncontested in the tenth Jatiya Sangsad.

Noted ruling party leader Israfil Alam was born in the village Jina of Raninagar upazila under Naogaon district on March 13 in 1966.

His body will be brought to his village home this noon and he will be buried at his family graveyard after a namaj-e janaza.

In the ninth parliament, Israfil Alam was chairman of parliamentary standing committee on the Labour and Employment Ministry.

Untill his death, he served as a member of parliamentary standing committee on Textile and Jute and chairman of parliamentary standing committee on the Labour and Employment Ministry in current parliament.
