Extensive tree plantation stressed to reduce carbon emission

RAJSHAHI, – Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) is pledged-bound to make the metropolis green through massive plantations with an ultimate goal of safeguarding the city environment and biodiversity.

All the authorities of public and private entities including educational institutions and installations should supplement the city corporation’s efforts of massive plantations.

RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton made this urge while visiting the tree plantation and its nursing programme on the footpath and island of a newly constructed four-lane road in the city on Wednesday afternoon.

He said massive tree plantation can help reduce carbon emission at a substantial level and that is very important to protect ecological balance in the dried region.

All quarters should take the responsibility of protecting the city and its adjacent areas from the adverse impact of climate change and massive plantations can be the vital means of attaining the target.

Liton urged all the city dwellers to plant tree saplings including the fruit trees in all vacant places and other catchment areas of all institutions to create a greenery atmosphere everywhere in the city.

Mayor Liton viewed that there is no alternative to creating more forest area to address the adverse impacts of climate change caused by global warming.

Fruit tree plantation can also be the effective means of meeting nutritional demands with food security and ecological balance, he added.

RCC Environment Development Officer Syed Mahmudul Islam said 200 tree saplings were already transplanted on both side footpath and island of the road and 3,000 more trees will be transplanted.

The four-lane east-west connecting road from the Rajshahi-Naogaon highway to Mohanpur Rajshahi-Natore highway is being constructed with the main thrust of building a strong and effective communication system.

Construction of a two-lane 327.5-meter flyover with ram on the railway track is one of the major components of the 6.793-killometer road construction project which is being implemented at a cost of around Taka 182.68 crore.

Upon completion of the project works by this year end, the road will create scopes of improving socio-economic condition of the public in general side by side with reducing urban poverty; installing an easy communication system between the Rajshahi city and national and regional connectivity.
