Flood marks deterioration at places in B’putra basin

RANGPUR,– The flood situation marked deterioration at places and remained mostly stable in other areas today as major rivers recorded both rise and fall to flow above the danger marks (DM) at nine points in the Brahmaputra basin.

Officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (WDB) said the situation deteriorated in Kurigram, Gaibandha and Jamalpur while remained mostly stable in Bogura and Sirajganj and improved further in Rangpur, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat today.

The flood situation might remain mostly stable in Jamalpur, Bogura and Sirajganj, deteriorate in Kurigram, Gaibandha and Nilphamari and continue to improve in Lalmonirhat, Rangpur districts during the next 24 hours.

According to BWDB sources, water levels of the Dharla rose by 30cm at Kurigram, Ghagot by 5cm at Gaibandha and Brahmaputra by 14cm at Noonkhawa and 9cm at Chilmari points during the last 24 hours ending at 9am today.

Water levels of the Jamuna marked rise by 3cm at Fulchhari and 4cm at Bahadurabad while fall by 4cm at Sariakandi, 11cm at Kazipur and 8cm at Sirajganj points during the period.

The Dharla was flowing above the DM by 65cm at Kurigram Ghagot by 48cm at Gaibandha and Brahmaputra above the DM by 40cm at Noonkhawa and 51cm at Chilmari points in Kurigram at 9 am today.

The Jamuna was flowing 75cm above the DM at Fulchhari in Gaibandha, 82cm at Bahadurabad in Jamalpur, 84cm at Sariakandi in Bogura, 63cm at Kazipur and 60cm at Sirajganj at 9 am.

The Teesta marked a fall by 25cm at Dalia in Nilphamari and rose by 31 at Kawnia in Rangpur and was flowing below the DM by 5cm and 24cm below the DM at these points respectively at 9am today.

Talking to BSS today, Chief Engineer for Rangpur Zone of BWDB Jyoti Prosad Ghosh said that all flood control embankments and structures are remaining safe and protection works of riverbanks at vulnerable points are continuing in the zone.

Meanwhile, the district administrations have further intensified distribution of relief among the flood-hit people of Rangpur division.

Acting District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) of Lalmonirhat Shammi Kaiser said floodwaters have affected over 1.77 lakh people of 39,584 families in 22 unions under five upazilas of the district.

“We are distributing 299 tonnes of rice and Taka seven lakh as general relief, Taka two lakh each for baby foods and animal fodders and 3,000 packets of dry foods among flood-hit people of the district,” she added.

DRRO of Rangpur ATM Akhteruzzaman said distribution of 330 tonnes rice and Taka 18.50 lakh, 3,000 packets of dry foods and Taka two lakh for animal fodders continues among 60,000 people of 15,000 families flood-hit people of the district.

Nilphamari DRRO SA Hayat said the deluge has affected 26,000 people of 6,270 families of Dimla upazila in the district where distribution of 100 tonnes of rice, Taka one lakh and 1,000 packets of dry foods continues.

DRRO of Gaibandha Md. Moazzem Hossain said distribution of 330 tonnes of rice, Taka eight lakh, 3,650 packets of dry foods, Taka two lakh each for baby foods and animal fodders continues among 1.35-lakh flood-hit people of 33,500 families in the district.

Acting DRRO of Kurigram Abdul Hye Sarker said distribution of 190 tonnes of rice and Taka nine lakh, 4,000 packets of dry foods, Taka two lakh each for baby foods and animal fodders continues among 2.27 lakh flood-affected people in the district.
